How to Choose a Ladies Readymade Suit: Size, Fabric and Fit

A readymade suit is stitched and ready to wear, so there is no tailor to wait for. The trade-off is that you are choosing from set sizes, which makes measuring properly and knowing your fabrics far more important. Here is what we tell customers in store.

Measure before you order, not after

Asian sizing rarely matches UK high-street sizing, and it varies between makers. Rather than ordering the size you usually buy, take three measurements with a tape measure over light clothing:

• Chest: around the fullest part, keeping the tape level under the arms.
• Waist: at the narrowest point, with the tape comfortably loose.
• Hip: around the fullest part, usually about 20cm below the waist.

Then compare those numbers against the measurements listed on the product page rather than the size label. If you fall between two sizes, take the larger one: a kameez that is slightly roomy hangs correctly, while one that pulls across the chest will never sit right.

Two piece or three piece?

A two piece is the kameez and trousers. A three piece adds a matching dupatta, which is what most people want for Eid, a wedding or any occasion where photos are being taken. If you already own plenty of plain dupattas, a two piece in a heavier fabric can be better value.

Match the fabric to the occasion

• Lawn and cotton are light and breathable, which makes them the sensible choice for daywear, summer and anything you will be wearing for hours.
• Chiffon and georgette drape softly and photograph beautifully, so they suit evening events and parties.
• Silk, raw silk and organza hold their shape and carry heavy embroidery well, which is why they dominate formal and bridal wear.
• Velvet is a winter fabric. Warm and rich under artificial light, but heavy in a crowded hall.

Check the trouser length

The most common alteration we see is trouser length, not the kameez. Trousers are usually cut long on purpose so they can be shortened. Measure from your waist to the floor in the shoes you plan to wear, and compare that with the length given on the page.

Think about the embroidery, not just the colour

Heavy embroidery around the neckline and sleeves adds structure and weight. That is exactly what you want for a formal event, but it can feel stiff for everyday wear. For daywear, look for printed or lightly embroidered pieces that move with you.
